Social Networking October 20, 2009

I find it interesting that social networking is one of the most in demand and widely use web application. Facebook for example is a social networking site, easily manageable and is free for anyone to sign-up. After you had sign-up, the only thing left is to do is add friends, and then you can add friends of your friends, and so on and so forth. This link that binds you to your friends is the social network, a structure of interaction and social connection. Users either local or global will share their personal information – hobbies, likes/dislikes, interests, etc., with their friends and family in this broad collection, which can be viewed by the public. As a matter of fact, the World Wide Web is also another type of social networking because of different links that connects one webpage to another. When you want to buy a book and you searched it in Google, the result will show many websites that has the product that you want. It is easy to navigate this way with all the resources that companies and businesses are providing; to attract and have an appeal to the customers. Also, customers are not the only ones who benefit from social networking, but companies find it a way to interact with their customers to improve their brand image.
Although social networking is an advantage for most of us, I believe that it also has its own disadvantages, an example is security. If you had been sharing all sorts of information about yourself without filtering very personal things, your security could be compromise quite easily. Because the web is a public domain, there is without a doubt a person or people who will take advantage of it. There are many articles about identity thefts – fraud that involves stealing money or other benefits which is hard to ignore, if your identity is compromise it will be difficult to try and get it back, because of lack of evidence. Misuse of these freedoms that is offered by the social networking service is taken seriously and so there is no surprise to the amount of penalty which is applied. I think the more information that you provide, the easier your security can be breached.
Furthermore, I believe social networking will continue to develop because of its advantage of having web-like structure of connectivity. In addition, it created opportunities for example; academic commentators to pursue studies and surveys that might be beneficial for the society and Social science researchers study its impact. It has come a long way since the first efforts is introduced in “online communities such as The WELL in 1985, Theglobe.com 1994, Geocities 1994 and Tripod 1995”; Wikipedia. From then on, the number of users that use social networking has doubled; I expect it will increase further in two or more years. The downside to this is it can be use by government officials or lawyers against a person being persecuted, in fact many evidence is revealed by looking at someone’s profile in Facebook, it might not be straight-forward but there are links. In summary, social networking is as valuable as it is fragile, if used wisely it is a great tool to enjoy.

There are many reasons why I like making web pages. One reason is because of the variety of things you can do with it, another is because of the many opportunities and lastly because of its flexibility. Whether it is html, css or javascript, there are so many things you could do just by manipulating the codes. You could be reckless or neat or just random, but in the end, the webpages’ appearance depends on the effort you put into it. Also, the contents of the webpage depends on what message you are trying to convey, the audience and the goal of the site. The first time that I learn how to use codes in html was when I was in high school, I came home that day excited about wanting to do more because I think it is interesting in just by typing words; you can add videos, images, animation and more. In addition, being creative and innovative is a powerful quality for making webpages, the sky is the limit. Therefore, there are a lot of jobs that are involve in this course, for example, senior webpage developer, ASP.net developer and web mapping programmer. And these are high paying jobs, that usually takes years of experience and training. I strongly believe that if you consider making webpages as part of your life, it will be easier for you to procure these opportunities. It also depends on your expertise whether it is flash, video editing, script writing; it is a crucial part. Although, anyone can be a free-lance webpage developer, it could be beneficial if you have a flexible career. In fact why wouldn’t anyone want to work for themselves? You will not be boss around, you can have breaks at any time you want and you can do your work at your demise. As a matter of fact, according to odesk.com freelance jobs grew at a rate of an astonishing 367% from 2007 to 2008, 50% faster than oDesk’s overall rate of growth. This would be like winning a lottery or an explosion of a stock in the stock market. All in all, the key to success in this industry is to put 120% effort and work on your strengths.
